Social Science Research Methods (postgraduate)
University of Hong Kong’s graduate summer program is designed to expose postgraduate students to advanced methodologies for conducting social science research. Covering both qualitative and quantitative techniques, the course will offer graduate students a unique opportunity to meet leading scholars in their area, to develop professional networks and to broaden their set of research skills. Instruction is in English.
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the program, however, there is no examination or grade/transcript for the program. Topics Covered: Designing a qualitative study Conducting in-depth interviews Analysing and reporting qualitative data Running effective focus groups Questionnaire design and survey research Basic survey analysis.

About HKU's Faculty of Social Sciences
The University of Hong Kong summer programs are facilitated through the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1967 and has since undergone rapid expansion and significant transformation. Today, the Faculty comprises the Departments of Geography, Politics and Public Administration, Psychology, Social Work and Social Administration, and Sociology. It also has nine multi-disciplinary research centers that provide a platform for research interaction and collaboration among colleagues on campus and in the wider world.
As the faculty moves forward to implementing the 4-year curriculum from 2012, it has identified two core themes to guide future development: social innovation and global citizenship. To reinforce the strength of its research degree programs leading to the award of MPhil and PhD degrees, the Faculty has identified nine research clusters in which it is particularly keen to recruit research degree students.
Building on the established research strengths of the Faculty, these are comparative Asian and international studies; contemporary china studies; criminology; culture and heritage; environment, urban planning and sustainable development; media and governance; psychosocial intervention and processes; public and social policy; and transnationalism and global migration.

Fee Includes
Program Fees are in US dollars and include tuition, accommodation, overseas health coverage, introductory survival language training, student consultation sessions and pre-trip services such as: orientation materials, visa-processing service and fee, personal advising, subject selections, liaison with your home university, financial aid services, and alumni support.
Fee Semester
This fee applies to the Summer 2010 program and is subject to change.
