Asia as the Global Future (4 weeks) - Summer or January Short Course


Overview

GlobaLinks Leanring Abroad, formerly known as AsiaLearn, offers a summer study abroad program with the University of Hong Kong. The University of Hong Kong offers a unique and well-structured, credit-bearing undergraduate program on Asian Studies. The program aims at enhancing participants’ awareness of the importance of Asia in world affairs. In doing so, it seeks to create an interactive learning environment where international students of high academic caliber combine knowledge acquired from lectures and seminars with an understanding of real world problems. Renowned businesspersons, community leaders, and scholars will contribute to the course as guest speakers. The abilities developed during this course will facilitate team building and public speaking skills, as well as creativity and resourcefulness through problem-solving and research. Instruction is in English.

With the program students travel to places such as Macau, Beijing, and Seoul.

Location

The Asia as the Global Future program is offered through the University of Hong Kong located in Hong Kong. During the program students will also travel to Macau, Beijing, and Seoul, South Korea. 

Hong Kong is an international financial center with the world’s freest economy, Hong Kong is Asia’s most globally connected city. As one can imagine, business and commerce create a constant buzz in the city and the fast-paced pulse can be felt around the clock.

Academic Highlights

Course Content:

Coursework and Assessment: Research Project, Essay, and Attendance

Each student will develop an individual research project, the final product of which will be an assessed essay. Submission deadline for the research project will be approximately a month after the program concludes. During the program students will also be required to submit an essay from a list of topics given during the program. The Research Project, essay and attendance will form the basis for evaluating individual student performances.

Students will be continuously assessed on their attendance. Attendance is mandatory at all lectures and field visits, unless prior approval has been given. Attendance also includes participation in the lectures and site visits (asking questions/raising issues).

Course Information
The course is based at University of Hong Kong’s campus in central Hong Kong. Special study tours to Macau, Beijing, and Seoul will be arranged in collaboration with the University of Macau and Yonsei University.

Academic Credit and Transcript Information:
Asia as the Global Future is worth 12 credits at University of Hong Kong, which typically equates to 6 U.S. semester credits, although actual credits that your home university will transfer will be determined by your home university.
An official transcript will be sent to the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad office upon completion of your program and final course assessment. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad will then send the official transcript to your home university and a copy of the transcript to you at your permanent address. A Grading Conversion Guide will also be included to help with credit transfer. 

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive 12 HKU credits on a University of Hong Kong transcript (approx. 6 U.S. semester credits) to transfer to their home university. Contact your home university academic adviosr or study abroad advisor for details on how the credits will transfer at your school.

Housing

As a student on an GlobaLinks Learning Abroad program we will provide you with accommodation in student dormitories. Housing is also included on the study tours.

Special Progams/Excursions

Study tours to Macau, Beijing, and Seoul will be arranged in collaboration with the University of Macau and Yonsei University. In order to enhance deeper understanding of local culture and multicultural interaction, local students will be invited to act as ambassadors for the students whilst in Hong Kong and during the study tours in China and Seoul.

Enhance your Experience

Global Citizens Development Modules

 

The new Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory, however we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Through the 3 modules, you will refine your skills in cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication.

Although English  is a common language in many GlobaLinks Learning Abroad program destinations, we recognize the need for basic communication in the host language. Therefore, all students will receive:  
  • LiveMocha - Prior to departure you will receive information and instruction for, LiveMocha, an online language learning program to help you learn your host language. Learn at varying levels and at your own speed. Get started now!
  • Lonely Planet Guide & Phrase Book - For both language learning and culture/history/country specific inforamton you will receive a Lonely Planet Guide and Phase book before departure, which will allow you to start planning your adventures and learning how to communicate with locals.
  • Additional Language Resources - To even further your language skill take a look at some of these optional language learning tools.

Being Prepared for your Time Abroad

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is there to help you through every step of the study abroad process! This includes making sure you are prepared for your time abroad! Due to the short length of the summer programs we are not able to offer our renowned multi-day orientation known as the Bridging Cultures Program. However we do still offer services that are tailored to helping you have the best experience possible. These include one-on-one pre-departure advising and group webinars prior your departure. The goal of the webinar is to help answer any final questions you may have and to fully prepare you for a summer of personal, social, academic, cultural, and professional Discovery!

Fee Includes

Program Fees are in US dollars and include tuition, accommodation, official transcript, overseas health coverage, introductory survival language training, program field trips (including air/train/bus transport between destinations during course), and pre-trip services such as: orientation materials, visa-processing service and fee, personal advising, subject selections, liaison with your home university, credit transfer assistance, financial aid services, and alumni support.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have the required GPA and have completed at least the equivalent of one year of full-time study at the university/college level. Students with a lower GPA than the requirement may be considered on a case by case basis. Please contact our office for more information.

BIO:
David is the Manager for Summer, Semester, and Year abroad programs in Asia. A former alumnus of AustraLearn, David studied abroad at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. He has traveled extensively in New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. David holds a B.S. in Psychology from Appalachian State University in North Carolina, and when not in the office is either biking, playing sports, or enjoying the mountains.
